A family in Embu West Sub County is in confusion following the discovery of a romantic relationship between two cousins.
The relationship between the fathers to the couple who are brothers has been strained following the discovery.
The 23-year-old man and 17-year-old girl are threatening to elope together and get married.
Residents in the area are in disbelief and angry at the family for allowing the practise considered a taboo to take place.
The relationship has lasted more than six months, according to the girl’s father.
He said his daughter has been sneaking into the cousin’s house and spend the night together.
“This is taboo and could bring us misfortunes. I have talked to my brother but he has not talked to his son,” he said.
The villagers stormed the man’s hut attempting to separate the two but failed in their quest.
The teenage girl who has since dropped out of school had gone missing for a week only to be found in the man’s hut.
Elders in the area also say they have talked to the two to end their romantic relationship but it has proved difficult since they live in the same compound.
Jacob Njiru, coordinator Peace Initiative community policing in Embu county led elders in trying to resolve the issue.
“The girl has already dropped out of school due to the relationship which has caused friction between the two families. We want to help them resolve the issues since they have a potential of causing a security breach,” said Njiru quoted by Nairobi News.
The teenager is now appealing for prayers saying her cousin took advantage of her since she was only helping him to quit smoking.
“I don’t know what got into me and I feel as if I’m possessed by some spirits. I appeal for prayers so that the evil spirit can leave me,” she said.
The news comes just weeks after the high court ruled that sex between cousins is not illegal in Kenya. In this regard the court allowed for the taboo relationship to exist without being criminalised.
High Court judge James Makau found that the Sexual Offenses Act did not mention cousins among the list of relatives under the offence of incest.
