Shabelle State troops occupy Marka, district commissioner says

June 19, 2014
Troops loyal to the nascent Shabelle State of Somalia administration have occupied the port city of Marka, the regional capital of Lower Shabelle, and halted the movement of people and vehicles, Somalia's Dalsan Radio reported.
Marka District Commissioner Mohamed Osman Yarisow said the Shabelle State wants to set up an administration in Marka for Lower and Middle Shabelle regions, without the approval of the Somali federal government.
On Wednesday, Shabelle State President Abukar Abdi Mardaadi appointed seven cabinet members and will shortly appoint the remaining eight members to complete a 15-member cabinet, Somalia's Goobjoog News reported.
The administration will temporarily operate from Marka, he said, and when circumstances permit they plan to relocate to Afgoye.
