More fighting reported in central Somalia

Heavy fighting erupted on Monday evening in central Somali town of Beledweyne, the capital of Hirraan region, reports say.

The fighting started after pro-government Ahlu Sunnah Wal Jamaa forces attacked positions of their rivals HIzbul Islam and Al-Shabaab militia.

The fighting is heavy and involves the groups which fought in the town last weeks. They are exchanging mortar shells, which can be heard everywhere,” said Ali Ahmed, a Beledweyne resident.

Residents in the town told Garowe Online that they have seen several battle wagons belonging to current town controllers, who are said to be retreating from their positions.

The fighting comes after officials from Ahlu Sunnah vowed to recapture the town, which they lost to the main rivals last Friday’s heavy clashes that killed several people.

All most the entire residents of the town have fled to safe areas after weeks of battle between the armed groups, who are fighting for the control of the strategic town.
